Coast to Coast

On Saturday 10 Feb the RATS again provided medical and safety support on the river section of the Speights Coast to Coast.

This is the 5th year we have been involved with the event with 22 RATS involved spread throughout the Waimak Gorge either with Jet Boats or at aid stations.  With a 0500 start for most (well about 0510 for James once he was woken up) and finish about 2130 we almost feel like we have done the race...well apart from still being able to walk!

The paddle proved to be quite a challenge for many this year with the flow rate low and a cold head wind.

competitors had multiple swims with treatment provided ranging from a warm cup of tea and some encouragment to helicopter evacuation...

For a number of years the gear we have taken has seemed a bit excessive with tents, blankets, cookers etc everywhere, but this year the degree of planning and preperation really paid off.

Thanks to Jim Stuart- Black and Charlie Blanch for being a honorary RATs for the day and helping out.
